A handmade babydoll dress is a short, sweet, high-waisted dress sewn by hand in small batches instead of in a factory. It has a fitted bust and a skirt that flares out from just under it. At MapleMatchaa, that silhouette is the heart of everything we make. This guide covers what a babydoll dress is, where himekaji style comes from, how to find your fit, and how to style one. At the end there's a short FAQ.
What is a babydoll dress?
A babydoll dress is defined by its waistline. Instead of sitting at your natural waist, the seam sits right under the bust. From there the fabric falls loose and floaty, usually ending at mini or above-the-knee length. Common details include:
- Puff sleeves, or a halter or spaghetti-strap neckline
- Lace trim, ruffles and bows
- Elastic or shirring at the under bust so it moves with you
- Soft, light fabrics that swing when you walk
The silhouette is easy to wear: there's no tight waist, and it suits a lot of body shapes. A short babydoll can also double as a top. Many of our pieces are designed to be worn both ways.
What is himekaji?
Himekaji (姫カジ) is a Japanese fashion style whose name blends hime ("princess") and kaji ("casual"). Think princess, but for everyday wear. It peaked in the early 2000s (the Y2K era) and is known for:
- Pastel and soft neutral colors
- Lace, frills, ribbons and bows
- Babydoll tops and dresses
- Sukapans (skirts with built-in shorts)
- A feminine look that's still relaxed enough to wear every day
Himekaji overlaps with what's now called coquette and dollette style. Its roots, though, are in early-2000s Japanese street and gyaru-adjacent fashion. That's the era that inspires every MapleMatchaa piece.
Our story: why we make them by hand
Hi, I'm T. When I was little, I wanted to dress like a princess: frills, lace, florals, polka dots. For a long time that wasn't the girl I was allowed to be. MapleMatchaa is me bringing her back.
Every piece is designed by me, or inspired by the Japanese fashion of the early 2000s I always loved from afar. Most are sewn by my mom. Working side by side on this shop has brought us closer than we've ever been. We sew in small batches from natural fabrics: cotton, linen and viscose rayon. That means each piece is slightly one of a kind, and some are custom dyed to get closer to the original designs. You can read the full story on our About page.
Why choose a handmade babydoll dress?
- Natural fabrics. We use cotton, linen and viscose rayon instead of mostly synthetic fabrics, so our pieces feel soft and breathable.
- Small batches. We make a few at a time, so you won't see your dress on everyone.
- One of a kind. Hand-sewing and patchwork mean tiny differences from piece to piece.
- Slow fashion. Fewer, better pieces made with care.

How to find your fit
Our babydoll tops and dresses come in two size ranges:
| Size | Pit to pit | Under bust | Length | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS–L | 16" | 13"–21" | 25" (tops) / 27" (mini dress) | XS–M, and L with cup size under DD |
| L–XXL | [measurements] | [measurements] | [measurements] | L–XXL (L with DD cups or up) |
To measure yourself:
- Lay a top you love flat.
- Measure straight across from armpit to armpit.
- Compare that number to the "pit to pit" column.
The elastic under bust stretches, so the under-bust range is the most forgiving number. As a small handmade shop, all sales are final, so please check sizing and photos before ordering. If you're unsure, message us at [contact email / Instagram @maplematchaa12].
How to style a babydoll dress, himekaji style
- Classic himekaji. Pair the Ame Babydoll Top with the matching Ame Sukapan, then add white lace socks and Mary Janes.
- Dress as a dress. Wear the Alice mini on its own with knee socks, a bow hair clip and a small shoulder bag.
- Dress as a top. Tuck or blouse the Alice over jeans for an easy everyday version.
- Layer it. In cooler weather, add a cardigan or a fitted long-sleeve tee underneath.
- Play with the bows. Re-tie the halter or the cinching bow differently to change the neckline.
Caring for your handmade pieces
[Care instructions: wash temperature, hand wash or machine, hang dry, iron setting]. Treat lace and bows gently, and store pieces flat or hung to keep the frills crisp.
